How Time Clock Shift Calculation Works

Converting employee time punch cards into payroll decimal hours follows three simple steps:

01. GROSS SHIFT TIME

Clock Out − Clock In

Calculate total minutes between arrival and departure (09:00 to 17:30 = 510 minutes).

02. DEDUCT UNPAID BREAKS

Gross Min − Break Min

Subtract meal or unpaid break duration (510 − 30 = 480 net working minutes).

03. CONVERT TO DECIMAL

Net Minutes ÷ 60

480 ÷ 60 = 8.00 decimal hours ready for timesheet submission.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Time Clock Conversion

Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time to find the gross duration, deduct any unpaid lunch break in minutes, and divide the remaining net minutes by 60. For example, 09:00 AM to 05:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch = (510 − 30) ÷ 60 = 8.00 decimal hours.
If your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time (e.g. In at 10:00 PM, Out at 06:30 AM), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours to cross the midnight boundary accurately.
Under labor laws (including FLSA in the US), standard meal breaks (typically 30 minutes or longer) are non-compensable unpaid time and must be removed prior to hourly pay calculations.
