How to Convert Hours and Minutes to Decimal Hours

Because time is base-60 and decimal is base-10, follow this standard two-step conversion process:

01. CONVERT MINUTES

Minutes ÷ 60

Take the minute portion and divide by 60 (e.g. 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75).

02. ADD WHOLE HOURS

Hours + Decimal Min

Add the whole hours directly to the converted decimal minutes (2 + 0.75 = 2.75).

03. FINAL PAYROLL ENTRY

Decimal Hours ($H$)

Multiply total decimal hours directly by the employee's wage rate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Hours and Minutes

Keep the hours as whole numbers, divide the minutes by 60, and add the two values together. For example, 2 hours 45 minutes is calculated as 2 + (45 ÷ 60) = 2 + 0.75 = 2.75 decimal hours.
Accounting programs (like QuickBooks, Excel, and ADP) use base-10 mathematics for currency calculations. Multiplying an hourly pay rate against sexagesimal clock time (like 7:45) causes severe errors unless converted to decimal format (7.75) first.
8 hours 15 minutes equals 8.25 decimal hours (Calculation: 8 + (15 ÷ 60) = 8.25).
