How Payroll Timesheet Rounding Works

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), employers may round employee punch clock times using standardized increments:

01. 15-MINUTE (7-MIN) RULE

0.25h Increments

1–7 minutes round down to 0.00; 8–14 minutes round up to 0.25 hours (15m).

02. 6-MINUTE (TENTH) RULE

0.10h Increments

Rounds to the nearest tenth of an hour (6m = 0.1h, 12m = 0.2h, 18m = 0.3h).

03. DIRECT RATE MULTIPLIER

Pay = Hours × Rate

Multiply clean decimal hours by wage rate without sexagesimal time errors.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Payroll Time Conversion

Under the FLSA 7-minute rule (15-minute rounding increment), minutes 1 through 7 round down to the previous quarter hour (0.00), while minutes 8 through 14 round up to the next quarter hour (0.25).
Multiply total decimal hours by the employee's hourly rate. For example, 8.50 decimal hours at $20/hour = 8.50 × 20 = $170.00 gross pay.
Clocks use base-60 (60 minutes in an hour), while currency uses base-10. Multiplying $20/hr directly by 8:30 gives incorrect results ($170 instead of $166 if misinterpreted as 8.30). Decimal conversion (8.50) ensures 100% mathematical accuracy.
